Bolivia – Prevention and Victim Support for a Life without Violence

INTERTEAM in cooperation with civil society actors and government agencies are contributing actively to the prevention of violence and victim support in Bolivia for a life without violence. To an extent that children and youth can grow up and develop  in a non-violent environment.

Violence against women and children is still a burning issue in Bolivia – despite proper legislation. Most children experience violence in their own family and/or school – places that should actually provide protection and security.

The source of Violence against women and children is variant

The causes of violence are manifold: for example, migration and modernization processes have weakened family and social cohesion and hence related values and protection mechanisms. As well, most people have grown up in a patriarchal culture: women are subdued by men, children are subjected to adults. This makes them more vulnerable to violence. Institutions that are responsible to hold up the law, such as centres for the protection of women and children, and the police that upholding the law still show serious deficits.

Victims need better support and monitoring

For the prevention of violence and the improvement of victim support and monitoring, it is necessary to promote a culture of peaceful conflict resolution in families and schools. As well the efficiency and quality of care by public and private organizations that are active in this area, needs to be improved and expanded.

INTERTEAM supports tangibly

In order to succeed, INTERTEAMs commitment is manifold:

  • Education and training in the field of violence prevention and victim counselling needs to be developed, improved and disseminated. New methods are introduced to the police and proper victim counselling, like techniques of crisis management in dealing with victims. In addition, therapy services for the perpetrators of violence will be expanded and with that the prevention of such violence in the future.
  • Educational materials that is designed for the mass media is improved and disseminated.
  • By means of further education, municipal workers and teachers are enabled to promote respectful behaviour and non-violent methods of conflict solution at schools respectful for parents and children.
  • In organic gardens, children, youth and women learn to improve their food supplies. This activity sees them empowered and less vulnerable to violence.
  • Organisations are supported through networking, for sharing their professional experience and their services with others. As a network they are enabled to take socio-political influence. Thus, prevention and care services will be included in government financed programmes that is reaching more people. These services have a long-term impact, without depending from support abroad.
  • Partner organizations benefit from advisory  in quality management and in the proper assignment of volunteers. With such an intervention, they can improve their services despite limited resources.

The successful collaboration between INTERTEAM and local organizations renders benefit to about 10'000 children, youth and women that are affected by violence.
